Why traditional marketers are at a crossroads

I didn’t go to school for marketing. In fact, I never took as much as a single course in marketing during my college days. And in hindsight, that might have been a good thing. Why? Because with every passing day, I see some of the more traditional, subjective facets of marketing (what some refer to [...]

Follow-up Study: The Best Citation Sources by Category

I'm excited to announce a follow-up to the last GetListed.org/Whitespark.ca study (Best Citation Sources by City) this morning: the Best Citation Sources by Category for U.S. businesses. As with the previous study, Darren and I used his Local Citation Finder tool and looked at some of the most common keywords within 70 local search categories across 53 large US cities, 20 medium-sized cities, and 20 smaller cities. We then scored the sites inversely based on ranking position combined with overall number of occurrences. The sites that appeared most often and with the highest rankings were deemed ?best? within each category.

I was going to put together a highly technical article to support my hypothesis, even going as far as to invoke shades of constructor theory, but then it hit me that’s its best to cover a counter-intuitive concept with a simply visual metaphor. Blogger Profile: Seth Godin and The World?s Weirdest Marketing Blog

How do you know when you?ve made it big online?

Here's one answer: when you search your first name on Google and you?re the top result.

It?s no surprise that the #1 result for ?seth? is the Seth Godin?s marketing blog. The site receives about 600,000 visitors per month and consistently ranks near the top of Ad Age?s Power 150 (a daily ranking of marketing blogs).

Godin?s blog is successful because it?s weird. It?s a ?purple cow? ? a term he popularized that describes ?something phenomenal, something counterintuitive and exciting and flat out unbelievable.?

Below, I?ll break down what Godin?s doing that?s so phenomenal, counterintuitive, and flat out unbelievable.

Why You Shouldn?t Get Bent Out of Shape About Siri Rankings (Yet)

Siri, and by extension Apple Maps, is a hot topic these days. With good reason. But I think it's important to take a step back and not fall victim to "shiny object syndrome," as SEO's (including your humble author) so often do. But the number of questions I get, and chatter that I see, about Siri seems to be way out of proportion. What should that proportion be?

The Internet gives us unprecedented power to produce, but it simultaneously offers unprecedented opportunity to distract ourselves.

Slip into the bottomless abyss of email, StumbleUpon, YouTube, and your myriad social feeds... and you may as well throw your goals for the day out the window.

How To Sleep Deeper, Wake Up Earlier & Become Superhuman

“Mom? 5 more minutes” sound familiar? I love to sleep. In fact, I love to sleep so much I think this is the main reason I got out of the military and eventually started my own business. I am one of those people that set their alarms earlier just so I can hit snooze three or four times? at least I was. Is Snooze Slowly Killing You? Maybe “kill” is too strong of a word, or maybe it’s not. But let’s define killing you. Have you ever noticed when you hit snooze you wake up more tired, get less done, have a foul attitude towards life, and are generally just not at your peak performance? Have you noticed this effects your business, fitness, and most importantly your relationships? Or the fact that you get the recommended allowance of 7 to 9 hours recommended by just about everyone? but never feel [...]
